Apple's iOS takes over from Google's Android as US favourite operating system

Apple and Google in ongoing battle

Booming latest Apple iPhone sales have pushed Google's Android platform into second place in the US smartphone market, reports revealed this week. The research published by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech showed Apple's market share had doubled from a year ago.

Apple sold more iPhones in 2011 than in the years 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 combined. Meanwhile sales of phones running on Android operating systems, like HTC, Sony Ericsson and Motorola Mobility models took a dip. Microsoft's Windows Phone also struggled to compete though analysts have predicted a great future ahead for the newcomer, some going as far as to say it will knock the iPhone off its podium by 2015.

“Overall, Apple sales are now growing at a faster rate than Android across the nine countries we cover,” Kantar's representative, Dominic Sunnebo, announced. These include the UK and Australia. Apple has also reported impressive sales numbers in China. Chief executive Tim Cook reportedly described the demand as “off the charts”.

The mobile market is key to Apple’s sustainability, Mr Cook stated in a recent interview. The company’s Mac computers are popular in the US and have outgrown the local market for 20 quarters in a row, however, worldwide sales lag behind PC systems and account for a single digit percentage of the market. Tablets and iPod Touch mp3 players are also vital and contributed largely to the sale of 350 million iOS devices Apple made last year.
