Britons against phones on planes

Nine out of ten British travellers are against mobile phone calls being permitted onboard flights, reveals a new poll. 86 per cent of those questioned oppose the idea as “it's annoying to listen to other people's conversations”.

The survey, carried out by flight comparison website Skyscanner, comes after Virgin Atlantic's recent decision to allow calls on select flight routes. The service will be launched on the company's London to New York route with plans to extend it to a further nine before the end of year.

Call costs are set at £1 per minute, and sending a text will cost 20 pence. Only 1 per cent of those polled would be willing to pay more for a flight with an airline that offered the service.

"In a world where we are now almost always 'on call', it seems people don't want to say good-bye to their last sanctuary of non-connectivity. Flying allows us to switch off for a few hours, both from our own calls, and other people's,” commented Sam Baldwin, Skyscanner Travel Editor.

If the use of mobiles was allowed on board, 48 per cent of respondents would send texts, 35 per cent would go online, but only 6 per cent would make phone calls.

The Firstnumber cheap international calls service is available on UK soil only.
