Broadband demand boosts BT profits

Staff at BT are celebrating after the number of new broadband customers signed up the the telecomm giants own brand internet service reached an all time high with overall profits exceeding half a billion pounds.

BT reported that an additional 356,000 customers started using the service, many of whom were added by companies such as Talk Talk or Sky who use BT's network.

Press Association also reported that the firm said 53% - or 188,000 - of these new additions connected using BT's own broadband service, the highest proportion since 2003.

There was also successes for the telecomm giant's television service - BT Vision - which saw additionl 40,000 customers sign up to the service in the last quarter of 2010, an increase of 24,000 sales compared to the previous quarter.

Perss Association reported that the figures came as BT posted a 30% increase in pre-tax profits to £530 million in the three months to December 31.
