BT Announce Pre-Tax Profits Despite Fewer Landline Customers

Tue 16 Nov, 2010 // Firstnumber Team

British Telecom has announced massive pre-tax profits, despite a drop in the number of people signing up to its landline service.

In the run up to the end of the second tax quarter, BT revealed profits of £406m; an increase of nearly 48% on last year.

While BT experienced notable growth in areas like broadband and BT Vision TV service, the telecoms giant recorded a dip of 3% in the number of people signed up to a BT landline.

BT sees rise in broadband sales

The fall in landline users has been attributed to an increasingly competitive marketplace as well as a move away from the home telephone in favour of mobile phones.

Record pre-tax profits means BT is now expected to re-assess their yearly profits of around £5.8 billion; a bounce back from the two profit warnings BT received from earlier this year.

Chief executive Ian Livingston explained the boost in profits:

“We have made significant progress in improving the profitability and cash flow, enabling us to invest in building the foundations for revenue rowth in 2012/13.

“Our fibre roll out has passed three million premises and BT Infinity orders are now running at over 4,000 per week.”
