BT Launch Free Wi-Fi Mobile Application for BT Broadband Customers

Wed 15 Sep, 2010 // Firstnumber Team

Last week, BT unveiled its new BT FON application, designed to provide BT Total Broadband customers with free, unlimited access to the telecommunication company's 1.6 million Wi-Fi hot spots.

The app notifies customers of their nearest hot spot through which, with the help of a BT e-mail and password, users are able to connect to to the internet out-with their home. The BT offering differs from the standard search option available on Android and iPhone devices insofar as the former provides consistently free and non-password protected connections.

Smartphone users will be aware of the prompting facility of the iPhone or Android regarding nearby Wi-Fi access, much of which directs users to password protected accounts, and/or services which will incur a usage charge.

Rather than a dependence on such varied and unreliable access, the 1.6 million hot spots offered by BT FON and BT Openzone provide a coherent and systematic means of mobile internet access.

Manager of mobiles and broadband at BT, Mike Wilson, explains some of the benefits of the latest app:

“There are a lot of users who don't know that they can use their bundle minutes away from home. The application even has a map that shows users exactly where their closest hot spots are. It's a real asset to bundle users."

The development is highly advantageous for BT Broadband customers, especially in today's age of ever-increasing internet access via mobile phones. John Petter, managing director of BT Retail Consumer, expanded on this point, promoting the app as:

“..real value to our customers at a time when more and more people are using their mobile phone to access the internet.”

In addition to the practical benefits for users, there is also a real moral incentive for downloading the recent mobile application: BT have pledged 50p to Children in Need each time a customer downloads BT FON. BT hope to reach a maximum of £10,000 raised through customer downloads.
