Celebrating 39 years of mobile phone calls

Mon 16 Apr, 2012 // Firstnumber Team
Mobile phones used to be a chunky affair

Did you know almost 40 years have passed since the first mobile phone call was made? April 3rd, 1973 was just a regular day in New York until Martin Cooper, the then general manager of Motorola’s Communications Systems Division, rocked the world with a series of calls made from a chunky but wireless device. With a touch of irony, Cooper first phoned his rival at AT&T’s Bell Labs and is rumoured to have said: “Don’t know where to call?”

Cooper’s mobile phone weighed in at almost a kilogram. He has publicly recalled memories of fellow New Yorkers gawking at the sight of a man walking down the street while making a call. The comms specialist spoke of crossing the road while on the phone to a radio reporter, describing it as “one of the more dangerous things I have ever done in my life.”

It took Motorola ten years to introduce its first portable mobile phone to the consumer market. The “DynaTAC” weighed almost half a kilogram and cost around $3,500. Needless to say, it took a while for the innovative device to gain popularity. Only in 1990 did the number of mobile subscribers in the USA hit one million.

Since making the first mobile call, Cooper has co-founded ArrayComm Inc. (a wireless technology and systems company), mobile phones now boast more subscribers than landlines, and mobiles are known to weigh as little as 30 grams.
