Cheap Calls to Bangladesh Tops Firstnumber Chart

Mon 01 Feb, 2010 // Firstnumber Team

With a population of 168 million people to call, it's no wonder Bangladesh takes the top spot as Firstnumber's 'most dialled destination' during 2009.

Beating off strong competiton from the likes of Thailand, Pakistan and the United States, Bangladesh proved to be the most popular country to call from a UK landline and at just 3p a minute you can start to see why.

Making cheap international calls to mobiles and landlines in Bangladesh has never been easier

Making cheap calls to Bangladeshi mobiles using Firstnumber's 3p tariff also proved popular with Brits, perhaps given Bangladeshis own some 50million handsets nationwide and almost 90% of rural towns are still without a basic landline phone service.

Bangladeshis' appreciation of their mobile phones continues to grow, especially with the introduction of iniatives like three-minute-long English lessons for just 3 taka (the equivalent of 2p).

The project which was started by the BBC's charity arm aims to teach 6 million Bangladeshis English by 2011 and received over 400,000 calls in its first few days alone.
