Destination of the month: Canada

Wed 06 Jun, 2012 // Firstnumber Team
destination of the month Canada

Canada is the second largest country in the world and as such provides a huge variety of sights and activities for visitors to enjoy.

Pride of Canada

The Bay of Fundy sees the most dramatic tides in the world. The 270km ocean bay lies between the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. During just a single tide cycle more water passes through it than the combined flow of the world's freshwater rivers. That's 115 billion tons of water!
Local folklore attributes the tide to a giant whale, while oceanographers put it down to tidal resonance or how long it takes for a wave to reach the inner shore from the mouth of the bay.
Explore the area's rocky shores, abundant forests, and nature trails. Sample some of the fantastic fresh seafood, including local seaweed delicacy: dulse.

The Rocky Mountains in the eastern province of Alberta are home to some of the world's best winter sport resorts, hiking trails, and national parks such as Banff and Jasper. The snow-peaked mountains are reflected in the region's stunning emerald-coloured lakes.
Visitors can enjoy the pure mountain air while trying to spot the area's numerous moose, deer, and even bears. One of the best ways to witness the Rockies is the Canadian Pacific Railway. An adrenaline-packed alternative is the Icefields Parkway tour bus that will take you right across a glacier.
Traditional local cuisine is based on fresh game: caribou, elk, duck, moose, and even beaver, as well as fish. Alberta's favourite dessert is the butter tart, a stuffed pastry.

Quebec is Canada's French-speaking province with a distinctly European flavour. It's home to the world-famous cities of Montreal and Quebec with their lovely architecture and vibrant nightlives.
Visiting a sugar shack where maple syrup is produced is one of the region's best attractions, but can only be done in season, during March and April. You'll be fed foods such as ham, sausages, baked beans, scrambled eggs, and alike all doused with a generous amount of maple syrup, and you'll be expected to dance to live band music.
You could also be indulging in other regional activities such as dog sledding, snow rafting, or whale watching near the world's southern-most fjord, Saguenay. For a Quebec adventure to be complete you need to scoff at least one portion of poutine. The local “delicacy” consists of chips, gravy and cheese curd. It's great for warming up in the cold winter months.

The list could go on and on to include the stunning destinations of Vancouver and Whistler, Yukon, Toronto, and so many more. Canada truly is a country to return to.

Quirky facts about Canada

Canada has more donut shops per capita than any other country in the world.

The province of Quebec produces approximately three quarters of the world's maple syrup.

Canada is home to the longest street in the world. Yonge St stretches over 1,896 km through central and northern Ontario.

Every year the Hotel de Glace or Ice Hotel is built in Quebec, using 400 tons of ice and 12,000 tons of snow. It melts away every summer.

Canada is so big it spans across a whopping six time zones.
