Destination of the Month: United States of America

Wed 14 Mar, 2012 // Firstnumber Team
Most visitors choose to return to the USA

The USA is a dream destination for many. The promise of so many different adventures in each of its 51 states means most visitors also want to return. Get to know just some of the fun activities you could get up to when in the USA minus the conventional New York shopping trip, Orlando Disney World visit and Las Vegas gambling adventure.

Louisville in Kentucky is home to some weird and wonderful tourist attractions. Not only can you admire the world’s largest baseball bat, but you can also delve into a former stone mine, now known as Louisville Mega Cavern. Visitors can take an hour-long tram tour through the numerous caverns, stopping off at the worm farm and ex-nuclear survival bunker, or those seeking more adrenaline-packed thrills can hop on one of the zip lines, the most daunting of which is deemed the “Zip Into Hell”.

Visit Georgia to discover Rock City set atop the great Lookout Mountain, from which you can (supposedly) admire panoramic views spanning across seven states. Venture along the Enchanted Trail to see nature at play, stunning rock formations and over 400 native plant species. Cross the nerve-racking Swing-A-Long Bridge, squeeze through the narrow passageway of Needle’s Eye and enjoy breath-taking views of the surroundings. While in Georgia, be sure to drop by Tallulah Gorge, one of the most stunning canyons in eastern USA, where you can hike, kayak and even swim on sliding rocks.

Contrary to what many people believe, Washington D.C. is not in Washington State. The state borders Canada in the most North-West part of the US. Home to some of the most stunning scenery, made famous by the Twilight film series, visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor activities. Top up on fresh air by taking a stroll through the stunning Olympic National Park with views across the mountain range. Alternatively, if water is your element, head to one of the many beaches. Alki Beach is Seattle’s answer to a Californian seaside, complete with boarders, bikers and bonfires. For a more peaceful setting, travel to Blake Island State Marine Park for a spot of bird watching and other traditional activities.
Those content with a city break can enjoy the trendy Seattle and should definitely include a coffee stop at the original Starbucks.

To get you in the mood for a trip to the USA, here’s a bit of trivia.
