French woman receives whopping trillion-Euro phone bill

bill shock

A woman in France received a telephone bill for nearly 6,000 times the country's annual gross domestic product. It appears the phone company, Bouygues Telecom overdid it on the zeros, and what was initially a bill for Euro 11,721,000,000,000,000 was eventually lowered to the correct sum of Euro 117.21 (£94.44).

Solene San Jose, a resident of Pessac in the Bordeaux region, has had the money she owed waived as the operator admitted their mistake. But not until the woman put up a fight, however.

San Jose feared the worst when customer service advisers told her they couldn't amend the computer-generated sum or stop the money from being taken from her account. She continued making frantic calls until she was reassured the mistake had been rectified.

"There were so many zeroes I couldn't even work out how much it was," San Jose told the press.

Bouygues Telecom told AFP that the situation had arisen as a result of a printing error and miscommunication between the client and call centre staff.
