Available at a consumer-friendly price of £30, Google's Chromecast is being forecast as a major rival for Apple's £99 TV product. This new gadget claims to make televisions “smarter” by letting viewers stream video content from the internet. This includes shows from YouTube, Netflix and BBC iPlayer.

"Chromecast is all about speed and simplicity," said Suveer Kothari, the British director of global business development for the Chromecast at Google.

"It's about making it really quick and easy to access the content you want on the big screen. Chromecast is really driven by second screen devices like mobile phones and tablets, which consumers are already comfortable with, and allow you to do things that would not be possible with a regular remote."

Apart from an HDMI connector, the Google Chromecast looks no different from a large USB flash drive. It will be available from a wide range of high street and online retailers, including Currys, PC World, Amazon, as well as being available directly from Google. While the device doesn't have a remote, it relies solely on a smartphone, tablet or computer for control.

The Chromecast launch is Google's most recent attempt to gain a share of the £100bn television market, in which other giants, such as Apple, have found it difficult to grab a chunk of.

According to app experts, Chromecast has a good chance of succeeding because it's much more open as a platform than existing, web-connected TVs that users are accustomed to. This means that it can be fuelled by the Android app store, making it a tempting proposition for thousands of developers.
