Ofcom Failing To Encourage Landline Competition

Following an MPs report, it has been suggested that communication industry watchdog, Ofcom, is not doing enough to encourage competition among landline providers.

Despite the report suggesting that the overall picture of UK communications market was positive, there was still more that could be done in terms of improving competition levels.

Speaking to BBC News, public accounts committee chairman – Margaret Hodge – said:

“The communications market is in most cases working well and consumers are enjoying the benefits of competition.

“However, we are concerned that Ofcom has not done enough to deal with persistent problems such as the difficulty of switching telecom provider, and the limited competition in the fixed-line telephony market.”

The committee also raised the issue of what Ofcom was doing to prevent 'silent calls' which occur when sales companies dial more than one number at once but do not have anyone ready at the end of the line to speak.

Taking into account the 9,000 complaints that were made last year regarding silent calls, Ofcom has upped its strategy to tackle nuisance calls with a £2million fine applicable to any agency who regularly carries out such calls.

BBC News reported that Barclaycard received the biggest fine for silent calls to date, receiving a penalty of £50,000 under the old system.
