Old mobile phones to raise money for starving children

A UK based charity for disadvantaged children is urging the public to donate their old mobile phones to raise money for a free meal scheme. Kids Company believes that as many as one million children across the country could be suffering from “food insecurity” or not knowing when their next meal will be. This is equivalent to two per every school class.

According to the charity, some parents are “just not managing to have food in the house”. This is being blamed on budget struggles, substance abuse, and mental health problems.

Two recent cases really shocked the organisation. One hungry child was caught stealing and later eating raw meat. Another, a nine-year-old girl was found locked in her flat trying to eat the pictures of food she had drawn on a plate.

Kids Company provides free meals at its London-based centres. Over the last 12 months the charity has seen a 233 per cent increase in the number of children seeking food. The average age of these 17,000 kids is just ten years old. Many bring younger siblings.

Each phone donated could be enough to provide a month's worth of meals to a child in need. The organisation has joined forces with Netmums parenting website to achieve its target of £1m.

"Children don't have a public voice so they can't tell us. We have a collective responsibility to make sure every child has enough to eat," said Kids Company founder Camila Batmanghelidjh of the initative.

Phones can be dropped off at T-Mobile and Orange stores.
