Olympic Park equipped to handle strain on mobile networks

Olympic park mobile networks

Mobile communications providers are confident their networks will cope with the strain of participants, media and spectators using their phones at London's Olympic Park over the course of the Games.

The site has been fitted with thirty mobile phone masts, 14 of which are indoors.
Joining the 17,500 athletes and games officials housed in the Olympic village will be twenty thousand media representatives. The nine venues on site can host more than 160,000 spectators at any one time. This means peak times could see 200,000 to 300,000 people on site as spectators change over.

While everyone should be able to make calls, send text messages, and update social networks, data usage will be limited.

To ease the strain on 3G networks, BT has also built the UK's biggest single wi-fi installation. About 1000 wi-fi hotspots will provide free access to BT broadband, O2 mobile and Tesco Mobile subscribers. Other network users and overseas visitors will have the opportunity to purchase vouchers giving temporary access to the network.

Other wireless devices licensed for use on site include cameras, microphones and talkback systems for the media, timing and scoring equipment for sports, and internal communications systems for Games staff and emergency services.
