A thief who took a chance at robbing a passenger on a train ran out of luck when a fellow traveller captured his actions on his mobile phone camera.

The incident happened in the early hours of 2nd February on the Waterloo to Guildford service, used by many passengers to get home after a night out. A female passenger, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, was seen leaving the train without her bag that was later discovered on board.

Passenger Matt Parker watched a young man approach the girl’s belongings and rummage through them withdrawing a white smart phone. He asked repeatedly for the man to put the phone right back but he refused, retorting that he had never had his mobile returned after displacing it.

Mr Parker commented: “I was already keeping an eye on him when he moved over and then took the phone out of the bag. I was, to say the minimum, outraged.”

The conversation turned into a yelling match with good Samaritan Mr Parker trying in vain to get other passengers and train staff on his side. He then asked the unidentified thief whether he minded having his picture taken, which clearly he didn’t, as can be seen in the footage Mr Parker uploaded to YouTube. Pictures show the robber in all his glory, proudly showing off his find before hopping off the train at Weybridge with his bicycle, stolen phone in hand.

The British Transport Police are grateful to Mr Parker’s quick-thinking act of bravery, and are appealing to the general public to come forward with any information or the identity of the thief.
