Roaming costs contribute to lost business in many Fortune 1000 companies

Employees on foreign business trips are costing thousands to Fortune 1000 companies

Roaming bills acquired by employees on international business trips cost some companies over $1,000 per traveller per month, research has revealed. Many Fortune 1000 companies are seeking ways to control employee expenditure abroad. 24% of those surveyed went as far as to say the costs incurred have contributed to lost business.

The study, commissioned by global mobile network Truphone, and carried out by telecom industry information source CCMI, shows 40% of companies are forbidding or limiting the use of smartphones and other wireless devices while abroad. This is one of the latest moves of many to cut excessive expenditure.

“The key take-away from the survey is that virtually all respondents demonstrate a high degree of correlation in their desire for a more effective solution to control runaway wireless roaming costs. For a player that brings a high quality service to bear, this is a clearly valuable market niche,” said George David, president of CCMI on the findings.

128 financial decision makers from Fortune 1000 companies took part in the survey designed to find out the true impact of roaming charges on budgets worldwide.

The study comes at a time when discussions are taking place within the European Parliament about further cutting roaming rates in EU member states. According to the draft, the fee for an outgoing call when abroad would be capped at 15 cents per minute as opposed to the original plan of 24 cents. The price for using the Internet could get lowered to 20 cents per megabyte instead of 50 cents.
