Third of UK Mums Using Recycled Phones

Teenagers and twenty-somethings are increasingly passing on unwanted technology to their parents and grandparents, a study has revealed.

These tech ‘hand-me-ups’ are becoming more and more common in families as the younger generation is discarding technologies in favour of up-to-the-minute gadgets.

The study, by online retailer Pixmania, found that one in three mums in the UK is using a mobile phone that has been ‘handed up’ from another member of the family.

In the last 12 months, the iPhone 4S was the most likely tech product to be handed over to a family member. However, mobile phones aren’t the only technologies being passed on – the research also revealed that some 61 per cent of parents had adopted second hand tablets, TVs and game consoles from another family member.

Of the age groups polled, the study found that young adults under the age of 25 are the quickest to consider technology out-dated, tiring of their smartphones in just 11 months. Parents and grandparents on the other hand were less likely to splash out on new technology, preferring to save money instead.

“That technology is being handed up and essentially recycled in this way is encouraging to see, as the vast majority of the products we are talking about are capable of living on and enriching lives well beyond a year or two," said Christophe Reinling, B to C Director of Pixmania.com.

"It’s fascinating to see how differently the lifecycle of a product is viewed by different generations, and how in many families it is the mother who is least concerned with having the most up to date products."
