Edinburgh Festival

The streets of Edinburgh are filling up as thousands of culture-lovers flock to Scotland's capital for 2014's Edinburgh Festivals. The first three weeks of August play host to a number of different festivals, which together make up the world's largest annual cultural festival.

There are twelve festivals under the umbrella of Edinburgh Festivals, six of which run in August. Established in 1947, the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe are the oldest components of the Edinburgh Festivals, and still the largest today. In fact, The Fringe is the largest event of its kind in the world, in its own right.

Running from the 1st to 25th of August, this year The Fringe hosts a record number of performances – there will be 49, 497 performances of 3,193 shows across the 25 days. Around a quarter of the events are free - that's 800 shows, so there's bound to be something to suit every taste and budget in Edinburgh this August! The Edinburgh International Festival runs from the 8th - 31st of August, and the other six festivals include the Book Festival, Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Art Festival.

Performing in the festivals will be artists, dancers and comedians from over 47 countries, from Austria to Zimbabwe. If you're one of them, or one of the many tourists travelling to Edinburgh from far and wide this August, be sure to share the excitement of the festivals with your loved ones back home. Recount your first performance, or that amazing show you saw, with cheap calls to a huge number of countries with firstnumber.
