Despite public opinion suggesting that people in long distance relationships are more likely to break up, this isn't actually the case. In a survey of couples in long and short distance relationships, both were found the have the same chance of breaking up.

In fact, almost half of those in long distance relationships believed that separation made them and their partners closer, believing 'distance makes the heart grow fonder'.

When it comes to making a long distance relationship work, almost every councillor or relationship advisor will cite 'communication' as the most important factor.
