Mobile phone scammers use Antarctic numbers
Tue 01 Jun, 2010 // Firstnumber TeamThieves looking to scam unwitting mobile phone users have begun using Antarctic numbers due to the high calling cost.
The dialling codes are hidden in pirate versions of mobile phone games which covertly call Antarctica at costs of almost £5 per minute.
Virus and threats to mobile phones have seen 200% growth in the past three years with scammers able to execute criminal activity much more easily via mobile phones than they currently do online.
The pirate version of the 3D Anti-Terrorist game for Windows mobiles was uncovered as having links to scammers in April although the thieves are still racking up victims as hundreds of people download them game.
Thieves see mobile phones as an attractive target since most users are connected to a monthly price plan which doesn't flag up problems or run out as quickly as a pay as you go style tariff.
