Mozilla have unveiled an ultra-low cost smartphone for consumers in India. The phone, called the Intex Cloud FX, went on sale in the popular Indian e-marketplace for 1999 Rupees (around £20). The phone runs on Mozilla’s own Firefox operating system, and is designed to take advantage of India’s status as one of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets.

With a population of over 1.2 billion people, it is easy to see why the subcontinent is an attractive place to introduce an affordable phone option, and by the end of the year the country is expected to host more than 100 million smartphone users. Mozilla’s intention is to offer an option to people for who Apple and Android products are typically out of reach.

The phone boasts a 3.5 inch HGVA screen with a 320x480p resolution, as well as a 2 megapixel camera with an LED flash. Popular apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter are available on the phone, as well as a range of other apps available through the phone’s Firefox OS.

With Hindi, Tamil, and English compatibility, the phone should be well placed to take advantage of growing demand for similar products in the country. Time will only tell if it proves a success, but the marketplace for entry-level phones just got a lot more competitive.
