Phone app tracks users moods

There are thousands of phone apps designed to offer convenience and entertainment to phone users worldwide, but some people are searching for ever more personal ways to utilise their smartphones.

An entrepreneurial couple has developed a phone app for the iPhone or iPad that tracks the mood of the female user based on their menstrual cycle. Dubbed Code Red, the unusual application was dreamed up by husband and wife team Kevin and Lisi Hamilton.

Mrs Hamilton told the Baltimore Sun that inspiration struck when the couple realised that Mr Hamilton was never able to predict her cycle and the accompanying shifts in mood, despite the couple have been together for years.

The idea may have remained nothing more than that, if the pair hadn’t had the chance to explain their plans to Dave Schwartz from M.E.D.L. Mobile, an application development company. He said he saw great potential in the app, claiming he thought 50 per cent of the population could benefit from it.

Based on a 28-day menstrual cycle, the app works by asking for the last day of the women’s period to be entered – this can be changed monthly to account for irregular periods. The app then uses sirens or winks to indicate the women’s projected mood every time it is subsequently launched.

Alerts include, Smooth Sailing Alert, PMS Alert, Horny Alert and Code Red Alert as well as an Ovulation Alert, which can be used to predict the optimum times to have sex if planning conception.

Mr Schwartz, who sees thousands of pitches for mobile applications every week, said: "We definitely get a good idea of what people are looking for, what's successful and what is popular.

"Code Red was one that jumped right out at us."
