Smart phones set for memory boost
Mon 03 May, 2010 // Firstnumber TeamSmart phones could benefit from having their memory extended by up to 20% following a change to the way in which data such as images is stored.
The change to smart phone memory has been announced by telecoms giant Samsung who say the new technology features as system where data is accessed via 'memory modules' which use far less power than at present.
'Phase change' memory chips work by recording or erasing data when they are heated and are thought to follow existing memory card designs so they can be used in current mobile phone models.
A BBC news article reported that the Samsung technology could read and write memory up to ten times faster than other memory cards on today's market.
Samsung is also thought to eventually phase out traditionally flash memory cards in all its electronic products with phase change memory alternatives.
Phase change memory cards will be made available towards the end of 2010 and begin in a 512 megabit format.
