TalkTalk and BT hike landline costs
Sun 12 Sep, 2010 // Firstnumber TeamIn keeping with competitor BT’s decision to up landline costs by 50p from this October, TalkTalk have similarly decided to raise the price of monthly landlines by 55p.
Furthermore, TalkTalk have decided to increase their cost per minute with a rise from 5.8p to 6.4p per 60 seconds talk time.
Despite calls for landline providers to scrap early termination fees, TalkTalk have also boosted the cost of moving service from £29.99 a month to a staggering £49.99.
Coming into effect this Autumn, consumer groups fear that the steady price hike for phone and broadband could prove particularly costly for low income families.
A number of Watchdogs and industry publications such as PC Pro have voiced their disappointment following TalkTalk’s recent condemnation of the government’s plans to introduce a 50p per month broadband tax followed by the introduction of their own price rise.
TalkTalk claimed that the tax - which amounts to £6.00 per year - would see 100,000 poorer customers forced to give up internet as it would be become unaffordable.
TalkTalk have defended their own 55p increase however, saying that it is a price rise, not a tax rise, and that they were offering a budget service anyway.
