Vodafone eye up India

Thu 06 May, 2010 // Firstnumber Team

Mobile phone giant Vodafone is considering a return to India once the New Delhi government has relaxed plans to quash any amalgamation between the country's mobile phone operators.

UK-based Vodafone has a substanial stake in Essar – currently India's fourth largest mobile phone operator – that's worth £7.1bn.

The growing popularity of smartphones like Blackberry and Apple have led to increasing congestion on existing networks which has also seen an increase in service breakdowns and line suspensions.

Poor service has led to operators making greater and greater investments in their service despite the amount of data traffic quickly seeing demand outstripping supply.

Out with India, Vodafone is also set to compete on some important European sales such as Spectrum which is suitable for fast web browsing on mobile phone handsets.
